King County Reports First Drop in Gun Violence Since 2018

King County experiences its first decline in gun violence since 2018, as revealed in the recent 2024 Gun Violence Report by the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. The report indicates that reported shooting incidents fell from 1,701 in 2023 to 1,591 in 2024, a drop that reflects efforts to manage this public health emergency declared in 2021.

While the overall numbers are promising, disparities persist; 82% of shooting victims are male, and 76% belong to communities of color. Douglas Wagoner from the Prosecutor’s Office emphasizes that despite the recent progress, substantial work remains to address these disparities and ensure safety across all neighborhoods in King County.
