Maryland and Baltimore have filed a lawsuit against Glock, alleging that the gun manufacturer fails to enforce reasonable safety controls, allowing its semiautomatic pistols to be easily modified into illegal machine guns. The lawsuit highlights a concerning rise in gun violence, noting that modified Glock weapons are increasingly used in violent crimes, including a 2023 shootout that involved 33 shell casings from a suspect’s weapon.
State officials assert that the small, affordable device known as a “Glock switch” enables shooters to fire up to 1,200 rounds per minute, presenting a significant public safety threat. With Baltimore police reporting a nearly doubling in the seizure of modified Glocks over the past two years, the lawsuit seeks to ban the sale of these easily altered firearms, holding Glock accountable for their potential to fuel criminal activity.
