Soldiers Rate Army’s New Rifle Scope Poorly

The Army’s new rifle optic, the XM157 Fire Control smart scope, faces criticism from soldiers who rated it as below average during testing. This assessment is part of the fiscal 2024 report by the Defense Department’s Director, Operational Test and Evaluation, which reveals that the optic has significant usability issues, with soldiers stating it has a low probability of completing a mission without encountering critical failures.

Despite these negative findings, the Army plans to continue development of the XM157 optic, which incorporates advanced features such as a laser rangefinder and digital display overlay. The report highlights that while the optic received low ratings, the accompanying 6.8mm ammunition for the rifles reportedly increases lethality compared to older models.
