Utah Bill Mandates Gun Safety Lessons for Kindergarteners

A bill that has passed the Utah House with a 59-10 vote moves to require public school students, starting as young as kindergarten, to learn firearm safety. This initiative aims to prevent accidental shootings by ensuring that students receive age-appropriate instructions on how to respond when they encounter a firearm throughout their K-12 education.

The proposed lessons, which could start next school year, will be taught at least three times before sixth grade and will not involve live firearms. While supporters argue this measure addresses unpreparedness around guns, critics express concerns that it shifts the responsibility of gun safety onto children rather than focusing on parent education about safe firearm storage. Advocates from organizations like the Gun Violence Prevention Center of Utah are pushing back against the bill, underscoring that gun safety should primarily be the responsibility of adult gun owners.
