Changes in Gun Laws Two Years After MSU Shooting

Two years after the tragic mass shooting at Michigan State University (MSU), which resulted in the deaths of three students, the state has enacted four significant gun laws aimed at preventing future violence. These laws include universal background checks, red flag laws, safe storage requirements, and restrictions on firearm access for domestic violence offenders, reflecting a response to the community’s ongoing grief and need for safer environments.

According to gun violence prevention advocate Michael Mckissic, although these laws are in place, only one individual has faced criminal charges related to their violation. Mckissic emphasizes the importance of community awareness and education regarding these regulations, stating, “It’s up to us to continue to tell individuals about the laws and get the word out.” As advocates push for further reforms, the conversation around embracing and supporting the local community remains pivotal in the aftermath of this tragedy.
