Youth Gun Violence Prevention Pilot Program Proposed in Florida

A pilot program designed to reduce youth gun violence may soon be established in Gainesville, focusing on those aged 10 to 21 who are at risk. Proposed legislation, House Bill 441, spearheaded by Democratic Rep. Yvonne Hinson, outlines collaborative efforts between IMPACT GNV and the Department of Juvenile Justice to provide essential services, including mental health support and conflict resolution training.

The initiative recognizes that individuals under 21 are disproportionately affected by gun violence and aims to address this urgent issue with a budget allocation of $500,000 from the General Revenue Fund for fiscal year 2025-26. If approved, the program will not only provide access to therapy and substance abuse treatment but will also work with local officials to offer educational and job training opportunities, all with the goal of creating safer communities.
