Officer Shot While Investigating Carjackings in Waterbury

The Office of the Inspector General investigates an incident where a Waterbury police detective was shot in the leg while responding to a series of attempted carjackings. Detective Ronald Sackett was struck by gunfire from a suspect armed with a firearm equipped with a laser sight during the investigation on Clairmont Street. Despite returning fire, detective Sackett did not hit the assailant, who has since been arrested and charged with attempted murder among other offenses.

As part of the ongoing investigation, the Office of the Inspector General has released body camera and doorbell camera footage that captures the exchange of gunfire, including the sound of shots and strong language. This incident highlights the dangers law enforcement face while dealing with violent crime and raises questions about public safety in the region. The situation has garnered significant attention, and further updates on the investigation are anticipated.
