Attack on Nigerian Army Base Claims 20 Soldiers’ Lives

At least 20 soldiers from the Nigerian Army have reportedly been killed following a fierce attack by members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on a remote base in northeastern Borno State. The assault, which took place in the town of Malam-Fatori, lasted for over three hours as ISWAP militants, armed with gun trucks, overwhelmed the troops, leading to the death of a lieutenant colonel and several others, according to statements from surviving soldiers.

The attack marks a disturbing escalation in violence by ISWAP, which has been increasingly active in the region despite previous military efforts to contain them. Notably, the conflict has resulted in nearly 40,000 deaths and displaced around two million people over the last 15 years, impacting not just Nigeria but also neighboring countries like Niger and Chad. Residents of Malam-Fatori reported fleeing their homes as attackers burned structures and threatened the community, underscoring the dire humanitarian crisis in this region.
