Colchester County councillors are urging provincial authorities to expedite the permitting process for a deer hunt to address increasing deer populations that are encroaching on urban areas. District 4 Councillor Mike Cooper emphasizes that “the county is not a zoo,” advocating for wildlife management to protect local habitats from overpopulation and related issues.

With a recent plebiscite revealing that 77 percent of residents support a controlled hunt, the council is pushing to expand the hunting area to include densely populated regions like Truro Heights and Lower Truro. They argue that the currently limited hunt, which only removed 38 deer in Truro, is insufficient, and stress the need for a more aggressive approach to manage what they consider unsustainable deer numbers.
