Study Links Firearm Access to Higher Suicide Risks

The New Jersey Gun Violence Research Center at Rutgers has published a significant study exploring how Americans perceive the benefits and hazards of firearm ownership. The research indicates that many individuals overestimate the protective value of guns during home invasions while underestimating their association with suicide rates, with 55% of U.S. suicides involving firearms.

This study surveyed over 8,000 adults and revealed that 72% of gun owners claim protection as a key reason for firearm possession. Notably, nearly 60% of respondents who believe in conspiracy theories reported that firearms are highly effective for home defense, despite evidence suggesting otherwise. The research emphasizes the urgent need for better public messaging around gun safety and mental health, urging gun owners to secure their firearms to mitigate suicide risks.
