A jury has convicted two men, Jose Romero and Nathen Garley, of first-degree murder in the tragic shooting death of 11-year-old Froylan Villegas outside an Albuquerque baseball stadium in 2023. The incident, which mistakenly targeted a vehicle carrying a mother and three young children, prompted New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham to declare a public health emergency over gun violence, leading to temporary restrictions on carrying firearms in specific public areas.
In addition to murder charges, Romero and Garley face convictions for tampering with evidence and firing from a vehicle. The shooting resulted in the death of Froylan and left his cousin paralyzed, while his mother and baby brother escaped unharmed. Following the verdict, Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman expressed hope that the decision would bring some peace to Froylan’s grieving family, while the defense has announced plans to appeal the life sentence imposed by the jury.
