Historic USS Ward Gun May Find New Home in Museum

The historic gun from the USS Ward, responsible for firing the first American shots of World War II, may be relocated to the Minnesota Military & Veterans Museum to ensure its preservation. After serving as a memorial on the Minnesota State Capitol Mall since 1958, the 11,000-pound piece has suffered from rust and decay due to exposure to the elements, prompting museum officials to propose moving it indoors as part of a dedicated World War II gallery, set to open in 2026.

This significant artifact, primarily manned by reservists from St. Paul, is crucial not only for its historical value but also as a representation of the bravery and service of Minnesota veterans. Randal Dietrich, executive director of the museum, emphasized the importance of maintaining this “priceless World War II artifact,” with plans to restore it fully and present its story alongside that of the crew who served aboard the Ward. A decision by the Capitol Area Architectural and Planning Board is expected sometime this summer, and public comments are invited before the final verdict.
