Firearms’ Journey through Pittsburgh Law Enforcement

Pittsburgh police have seized over 2,700 firearms used in crimes since 2022, yet only about 570 have been destroyed. With nearly 1,500 firearms still housed in police evidence lockers, critics argue this illustrates the difficulties in managing gun circulation amid rising violence, as more than 841,000 guns were sold in Pennsylvania in 2023 alone.

While the destruction of crime-related firearms occurs annually, the lengthy process leaves many guns available for resale or return to lawful owners. This has led to concerns among gun control advocates about the effectiveness of current strategies in combating gun violence, as law enforcement grapples with an ever-increasing number of weapons in the community.
