Majority Support for Assault Weapons Ban in Rhode Island

A recent poll reveals that 64% of Rhode Islanders support banning the sale and manufacturing of military-style “assault weapons.” Conducted by Fleming & Associates for the Rhode Island AFL-CIO, the survey reflects a significant public sentiment on gun control amid ongoing legislative discussions. The poll indicates that Rhode Islanders are not only concerned about gun violence but also express overwhelming support for raising the minimum wage to $20 by 2030, with 70% backing the proposal.

The findings, derived from a telephone survey of 400 registered voters, also highlight a divide regarding labor union influence, with 42% believing unions have too much power, while 74% recognize their essential role in improving workers’ lives. As the Rhode Island legislature faces pressure to address these issues, Senate dynamics may be shifting, raising questions about how lawmakers will respond to the strong public support shown in the poll. This evolving political landscape may influence discussions around key topics like payday lending reforms and same-day voter registration.
