Oklahoma Moves Forward with Gun Safety Legislation

Oklahoma’s Senate Bill 50, designed to promote secure firearm storage, successfully clears a committee vote, providing a sales tax exemption on gun safes and safety devices. Senator Jo Anna Dossett emphasizes that this legislation is a fiscally sound investment in public safety, expected to reduce the annual $200 million economic burden from gun-related injuries and deaths in the state.

With an implementation cost of $178,000, the bill aims to incentivize responsible gun ownership while also protecting communities from the risks associated with misuse and theft. As the bill progresses through the legislative process, advocates are hopeful that the financial incentives will lead to increased safe storage practices, ultimately benefiting all Oklahomans.
