North Dakota House Passes New Gun Restriction Bills

North Dakota lawmakers advance two significant gun restriction bills that address firearm usage in public spaces and aim to enhance penalties for certain weapon-related crimes. House Bill 1588, which passed with a narrow vote of 49-43, prohibits firearms in educational buildings and empowers local governments to impose bans on weapons in public facilities. This legislation acts as a memorial to Fargo Police Officer Jake Wallin, who was tragically killed by a gun equipped with a binary trigger, underscoring the growing concern over firearm safety.

In addition, House Bill 1326, which received approval with a vote of 56-35, prohibits self-defense claims if illegal firearms are used in altercations. These two bills are now set to be reviewed by the Senate, while five proposals aimed at relaxing gun regulations were rejected. The developments signal a significant shift in North Dakota’s approach to gun control amidst ongoing national debates over firearm legislation.
