Supreme Court Examines Gun Company Liability in Mexico Case

The U.S. Supreme Court is currently evaluating a significant lawsuit brought by the Mexican government against American gun manufacturers, including Smith & Wesson and Interstate Arms. Mexico claims these companies have contributed to rising gun violence by enabling the illegal sale of firearms to drug cartels, challenging the protections afforded to gun makers by a 2005 federal law known as the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act.

As the court deliberates the case’s merits, the manufacturers argue they adhere to legal sales practices, akin to blaming beverage producers for underage drinking incidents. The outcome of this contentious case could have profound implications for the accountability of gun companies in the U.S. and their role in the transnational illegal trafficking of firearms, with a decision expected by June.
