TSA Detects 50 Loaded Guns at NC Airports in 2025

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has reported the discovery of 50 loaded guns at North Carolina airports during January and February 2025, a notable increase of 18 firearms compared to the same timeframe in 2024. Alarmingly, 26 of these weapons had a round chambered, prompting TSA officials to emphasize the critical need for greater public awareness regarding the transportation of firearms through airport security.

Gregory Hawko, TSA’s federal security director at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, warns of the severe consequences of traveling with a loaded gun, including fines ranging from $3,000 to as high as $15,000. As regulations dictate, guns must be stored in checked baggage, unloaded, and in a locked case; violations can also lead to the loss of TSA PreCheck privileges. This increase in firearm detections highlights ongoing safety challenges for air travel in the region.
