Law Amendment to be Revived at SBC Annual Meeting

A Texas pastor intends to revive a controversial amendment that prohibits Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) churches from employing women in pastoral roles during the upcoming annual meeting in June. The motion aims to suspend standing rules that, if passed, would allow for another vote on an amendment that failed to achieve the necessary two-thirds majority last year, receiving 61.45% support instead. Advocates like Juan Sanchez, pastor of High Pointe Baptist Church, argue it’s crucial to reaffirm the SBC’s stance against women pastors following the recent decision to retain a church that employs one.

The proposed amendment, initially drafted by Virginia pastor Mike Law, seeks to amend the SBC Constitution and could lead to a significant shift in the convention’s governance. Supporters of the amendment believe that clarifying the role of women within the church is essential for maintaining scriptural integrity, and they plan to mobilize support through an open letter addressed to fellow SBC members. The annual meeting will take place at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas on June 10-11, making it a key moment for defining the future of the convention regarding gender roles in church leadership.
