Alton Hosts Rally to Combat Gun Violence

In response to a recent shooting incident in which a student was targeted as they exited a school bus, the Alton community comes together for a rally against gun violence. Held on March 6, 2025, at the 1200 block of Central Avenue, the event features Alderwoman Rosetta Brown and activist Lee Barham, who emphasize the need for community action and unity to safeguard local youth. “We care, and we are going to cover our youth and we’re going to cover our neighborhoods,” Brown asserts, highlighting the rally’s focus on reclaiming the streets of Alton.

During the rally, Alton Mayor David Goins recognizes Tammy Houth, the bus driver who displayed outstanding heroism during the shooting, underscoring the essential role played by the community in addressing such violence. Police Chief Jarrett Ford calls for a collaborative effort to protect neighborhoods, reminding attendees that “this is a community effort” and urging all residents to engage actively. As voices rally for change, there is a growing call for initiatives such as a youth center to support Alton’s young people and prevent further incidents.
