80% of Parents Say Gun Violence Impacts Childhood in U.S.

A recent survey conducted by Sandy Hook Promise reveals that 80% of parents believe gun violence has significantly altered what it means to be a child in America today. The poll, which involved around 1,000 parents, found that many feel uncertain and fearful about their children’s safety at school, with 40% expressing weekly or daily concerns about gun violence in educational environments.

The stark findings are underscored by the organization’s new public service announcement, which uses the symbolism of teddy bears—often sent to memorials after school shootings—to highlight the harsh realities children face. With more children and teens (ages 1-17) killed by guns than any other cause, including car accidents, Sandy Hook Promise emphasizes that school shootings are preventable when communities are educated to recognize warning signs. The organization continues to promote its safety programs, which have successfully intervened in numerous planned school shootings, illustrating that proactive measures can make a difference.
