Iowa Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Armed Bank Robbery

An Iowa City man, Andrew Philip Derr, is sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in a January 2024 bank robbery at Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust where he brandished a firearm. The 22-year-old pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree robbery and will serve two consecutive 10-year sentences with a mandatory minimum of 10 years before he’s eligible for parole.

During the robbery, surveillance footage captured Derr jumping over the counter and demanding cash from tellers, ultimately fleeing with $16,705. The emotional impact of the crime was evident in court as a bank teller described the terrifying experience. In addition to his state sentence, Derr faces pending federal charges that could further complicate his legal situation.
