Zombie Deer Disease Confirmed in Ohio During Hunting Season

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has confirmed 24 cases of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), popularly known as “zombie deer disease,” among white-tailed deer during the current 2024-25 hunting season. In total, 5,783 deer were tested, with most infected animals detected in Allen, Hardin, Marion, and Wyandot counties, and Morrow County reporting its first known case.

CWD is a fatal neurological disorder affecting various deer species, and while it poses no confirmed threat to humans, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advise caution. Ohio hunters can now track CWD cases through a newly launched online dashboard, which details the locations and harvests of infected deer since 2020, reflecting ongoing monitoring efforts since the disease’s detection in the wild state.
