Denver Settles for $800K in Police Shooting Case

The Denver City Council has approved an $800,000 settlement to the estate of Duane Manzanares Jr., who was fatally shot by police in 2021. Manzanares, 30, was in Denver for his 8-year-old son’s leukemia diagnosis when the incident occurred. Police were responding to reports of gunfire near East Colfax Avenue and Ulster Street and shot Manzanares after he allegedly reached for a gun, firing a total of 11 shots.

This settlement follows the Denver District Attorney’s conclusion that no officers would face charges, citing the need for quick decision-making in high-stress situations. The civil case was initiated in June 2023, shedding light on the tragic circumstances surrounding Manzanares’s death, including his family’s struggle during a critical medical emergency.
