Teen’s Organ Donation Creates Legacy and Scholarship

Pedro Ortiz-Perez, a 16-year-old from Randolph County, tragically lost his life to gun violence, but his decision to become an organ donor ultimately saves eight lives. Just days before the shooting, Pedro obtained his driver’s license and selected to donate his organs, a choice that has now inspired a $1,000 annual scholarship for a high school soccer player at Southwestern Randolph High School, honoring his legacy and spirit of generosity.

Among those benefiting from his donation is 75-year-old Barry Wiener, whose heartfelt testimony reveals how receiving one of Pedro’s lungs has granted him a new lease on life. As Pedro’s family seeks to connect with the recipients of his donations, they remain hopeful that Pedro’s memory will shine through the lives he has saved and the positive impact he continues to make within his community.
