CWD Cases Rise in Wyoming Elk Hunt Areas

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has confirmed two new cases of chronic wasting disease (CWD) affecting elk in the state, specifically in Elk Hunt Area 62 in the Cody region and the Horse Creek Feedground in Elk Hunt Area 84 near Jackson. These areas are now under close monitoring due to their proximity to existing CWD-positive zones, raising alarms for both wildlife health and hunting regulations.

CWD is a fatal neurological disease that impacts deer, elk, and moose, and it has now been detected in four feedgrounds statewide. The increased cases have prompted the department to enhance surveillance efforts to assess the disease’s spread and inform future management strategies as winter feeding of elk continues, a practice that has been in place for over a century in Wyoming.
