JCPS Implements AI Gun Detection System in Schools

Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) has implemented a new weapons detection system powered by artificial intelligence, leading to a notable decline in firearms found on school campuses. Since the system’s introduction, the number of guns discovered during school hours has dropped from 28 to just four this year, with no guns reported beyond the new detectors, according to school officials.

Despite this progress, the system has not been foolproof; knives have still been smuggled into buildings, which JCPS acknowledged was an anticipated limitation. While Evolv Technology, the company behind the system, faces scrutiny for potentially overstating its capabilities, JCPS staff report generally positive experiences with the technology’s performance in enhancing student safety. As the district invests in this $18 million security initiative, community members are encouraged to learn more about its impact on school safety protocols.
