Delaware County Considers Ban on ‘Ghost Guns’

The Delaware County Council is approaching a critical decision as it considers an ordinance that would ban the manufacture, possession, and use of “ghost guns,” which are untraceable firearms often created using 3D printers or assembly kits. If passed, this legislation would position Delaware County as the fifth municipality in Pennsylvania to impose such restrictions, aligning with recent moves by cities like Philadelphia and Harrisburg to tackle the growing firearms crisis.

During a recent public meeting, Councilmember Elaine Schaefer emphasized the ordinance’s goal to protect residents by mitigating fear associated with these weapons, stating, “You cannot live freely if you are living in fear.” The proposed ordinance comes with significant penalties, including a $1,000 fine or up to 10 days in prison for violations, while exempting federal firearms license holders. Supporters advocate for stronger local measures despite challenges posed by Pennsylvania’s firearm laws, underscoring the ongoing national debate over gun control and public safety.
