Providence Police Report Significant Drop in Violent Crime

Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez reports a notable 10% decrease in violent crime for 2024, marking the lowest levels since 1990. Key offenses such as aggravated assaults and robberies have declined, as the department successfully seized 325 firearms, the highest number since 2006. Chief Perez highlights that the reduction in instances involving firearms during aggravated assaults is particularly promising, falling from 100 in 2023 to 69 in 2024.

Perez credits this progress to effective strategies, including targeted enforcement and collaborations with city leaders. While the police acknowledge that crime cannot be completely eradicated, they remain committed to enhancing public safety through resourceful policing methods. As of early 2025, police have already removed 62 guns from the streets, indicating ongoing efforts to mitigate firearm-related violence in Providence.
