Miami-Dade County Offers Scholarship for Gun Violence Survivors

Miami-Dade County has introduced a new scholarship program to assist high school seniors affected by gun violence, providing $2,500 to help cover their college expenses. The Peace & Prosperity Empowerment Through Education Scholarship is open to students in their final year and aims to support those impacted either directly or indirectly by such violence, with plans to benefit around 75 students in total.

Among those who stand to gain from this initiative is 19-year-old Sheila Cordova, the first in her family to attend college, who will use the scholarship to fund her education at Florida International University. Cordova’s powerful essay shared her experience of losing a close friend to gun violence, showcasing how this funding can transform personal grief into motivation for academic and community leadership. Miami-Dade officials believe that empowering students through education will cultivate future leaders and promote positive change in communities grappling with violence.
