KCKPD Stops Investigating Its Own Police Shootings

The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department (KCKPD) has decided to no longer investigate its officers’ shooting incidents, instead handing those responsibilities over to the Kansas Bureau of Investigations (KBI). This shift follows two high-profile police killings in 2023, during which body camera footage was made public due to Missouri’s Sunshine Law, revealing a complicated relationship between police transparency and investigative independence.

By transferring investigations to the KBI, KCKPD aims for more timely inquiries amid rising homicide rates, but critics argue this could lead to increased concealment of critical evidence. Since 2019, KCKPD has not released footage for the majority of officer-involved shootings, raising alarms about the potential for a culture of secrecy regarding police accountability in Kansas.
