Gun Sales Experience Significant Decline in the U.S.

Gun sales in the United States have dramatically declined, with purchases dropping to 15.3 million in 2024 from a record 21.8 million in 2020, according to a recent analysis by The Trace. Experts attribute this downturn to a combination of factors, including an oversaturation of the market as many Americans already own firearms and the historical trend of decreased sales during Republican presidencies, particularly under Donald Trump, who is now in office.

This decline is not uniform across the country; for example, Washington state saw sales plummet by 43% in December 2024 compared to the previous year, marking its lowest sales in 15 years. Despite the downturn, the number of guns available to the public remains staggering, with over 390 million firearms estimated to be in civilian hands, highlighting that the market still has potential for new buyers amidst shifting demand and new legislative proposals.
