Bloomington Police Step Up Gun Removal After FOID Revocations

The Bloomington Police Department intensifies its efforts to combat gun violence by joining the Violent Crime Intelligence Task Force, focusing on the seizure of firearms when residents have their Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) cards revoked. According to Police Chief Jamal Simington, nearly 300 individuals in Bloomington lose their FOID card rights each year due to reasons such as domestic battery convictions and orders of protection, and this initiative seeks to ensure they do not retain access to firearms.

The task force aims to address the complexities of tracking down firearms from revoked cardholders, a process that can be labor-intensive and time-consuming for police officers. Simington emphasizes the importance of closing loopholes in private sales where FOID checks are less frequent. A recent tragic incident in February, where a man fatally shot three people with a gun he didn’t surrender after losing his FOID card, underscores the urgency of this new directive.
