Mississippi Gun Laws Ranked Among Weakest in U.S.

A recent study from Everytown Research & Policy labels Mississippi as a “national failure” in gun safety, ranking it 49 out of 50 states for its weak gun laws. The analysis reveals that Mississippi has a gun death rate of 29.4 deaths per 100,000 people, significantly surpassing the national average of 13.7. Notably, the state has received a composite score of just 4 out of 100 for its gun safety regulations, which include the repeal of the requirement for a concealed carry permit.

This alarming ranking raises concerns about the lack of basic gun safety measures in Mississippi, such as effective background checks for firearm purchases. The Magnolia State Shooting Sports Alliance, which advocates for Second Amendment rights, questions the study’s methodology and argues that gun violence is influenced by a multitude of factors beyond legislation. The stark contrast with states like California and Massachusetts—praised for their stringent gun laws and significantly lower gun death rates—highlights the ongoing debates surrounding gun policy and public safety.
