GOP Bill to Allow Guns on Campus Fails in Committee

A Florida bill spearheaded by Republican Senator Randy Fine, which would have permitted guns on school buses and in university dorms, was unexpectedly defeated in a Senate committee. The final vote was 4 “no” to 3 “yes,” with a pivotal “no” coming from fellow Republican Senator Ileana Garcia, highlighting a rare instance of intra-party dissent among Florida lawmakers. This significant setback marks Fine’s last legislative act before he resigns to pursue a congressional bid.

The proposed legislation aimed to address rising safety concerns following an increase in antisemitic incidents on campuses. Fine’s comments during the hearing emphasized his view of protecting students amidst these tensions, yet the bill faced challenges due to lack of support and companion legislation in the House. With a Republican supermajority in the legislature, the failure of Fine’s measure further underscores shifting dynamics within GOP ranks, as lawmakers question the trajectory of gun regulations in the state.
