Cedar Rapids Man Sentenced for Firearm Possession

Tydas Jones, a 41-year-old Cedar Rapids resident, has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. Jones was caught during a traffic stop in December 2023, where police discovered a gun hidden under his center console, alongside potential illegal substances in his vehicle.

Jones admitted to knowing he was prohibited from owning a firearm and revealed he purchased the gun for $100 from an unknown seller while using marijuana at his workplace. In addition to his prison term, he is required to undergo three years of supervised release after his incarceration. This case highlights ongoing concerns about firearm access among individuals with felony convictions.
