Feds Investigate L.A. Sheriff’s Department for 2nd Amendment Violation

Federal officials have launched an investigation into the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to determine whether it infringes on residents’ Second Amendment rights. This inquiry follows a lawsuit by the California Rifle and Pistol Association, which claims that excessive delays and stringent requirements for concealed carry weapons permits violate the rights of law-abiding citizens.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, some applicants have faced over 17 months of wait times, raising concerns about a potential pattern of depriving lawful residents of their rights. The Sheriff’s Department maintains it complies with state laws and has a staff of 14 processing permits, yet the Department of Justice highlights California as a repeat offender in upholding Supreme Court decisions regarding gun rights. These developments prompt questions about the balance between public safety and individual rights in the region.
