DOJ Investigates LA Sheriff’s Concealed Carry Permit Delays

The U.S. Department of Justice announces a civil rights investigation into the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department regarding potential unlawful delays in processing concealed carry permit applications. Attorney General Pam Bondi emphasized that the Second Amendment rights must be upheld, noting that the investigation seeks to determine whether the Sheriff’s Department’s wait times amount to a violation of these rights.

The inquiry comes amid rising tensions between gun rights advocates and gun control groups, with the former arguing that delays contravene constitutional protections. Currently, the Sheriff’s Department faces a lawsuit over its permit processing times and fees, as it grapples with a staff shortage—only 14 employees are handling over 4,000 applications. This investigation highlights a shift in civil rights enforcement as it extends into the contentious area of gun ownership rights.
