NYC Officers Shot During Scooter Chase Get Promoted

Officers Christopher Abreu and Richard Yarusso, who were shot by a teenage Venezuelan migrant during a chaotic scooter chase in Queens last June, are among 125 officers recently promoted within the NYPD. The two, now detectives at the age of 27, displayed remarkable courage when they confronted 19-year-old Bernardo Castro Mata, who opened fire as they attempted to apprehend him during a robbery investigation.

In the intense shootout, Yarusso was struck in his bulletproof vest while trying to disarm Mata, who severely injured Abreu in the ankle before being shot himself. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch commended the officers for their bravery, emphasizing their role in efforts to combat gun violence in New York City. “This could have obviously ended quite differently,” Tisch noted, showcasing the significance of their promotion amid ongoing challenges in public safety.
