Redstone Arsenal Faces Surge in Gun Arrests

Redstone Arsenal, a vital U.S. Army installation in Alabama, reports a troubling increase in gun-related arrests, with 99 individuals arrested since the start of 2023 for bringing firearms onto the base. This surge follows Alabama’s recent law allowing permitless carry, leading to heightened security concerns at the 38,000-acre facility, which employs over 50,000 civilian and contract workers, significantly outnumbering its 700 active-duty personnel.

Deputy Police Chief Dennis Brown attributes the alarming number of arrests to many individuals being non-military personnel who may not be fully aware of the stringent federal laws prohibiting firearms on military installations. Following stricter security measures and rising incidents—up from five arrests from 2020 to 2022 to 45 in fiscal year 2024—officials emphasize the importance of ongoing public awareness efforts, yet some visitors remain unaware, even claiming they forgot their weapons were in their vehicles. The continuing trend poses serious implications not just for safety, but also for the security clearances of those arrested.
