Judge Allows Highland Park Victims to Sue Smith & Wesson

A judge has ruled that victims of the Highland Park mass shooting can proceed with lawsuits against gun manufacturer Smith & Wesson, claiming it marketed the firearm used in the tragedy to teenagers. This decision follows the tragic July 4, 2022, event where Robert Crimo III used the M&P 15 rifle to kill seven people and injure dozens more, highlighting ongoing debates over gun manufacturer accountability.

Lake County Judge Jorge L. Ortiz denied motions to dismiss from Smith & Wesson, along with gun dealers Red Dot Arms and Bud’s Gun Shop, allowing over two dozen wrongful-death lawsuits to move forward. The implications of this ruling could set a significant precedent for how gun manufacturers are held responsible for their marketing practices in relation to mass shootings.
