Illinois Gun Rights Advocates Call for Federal Review

Gun rights advocates in Illinois are pressing the U.S. Attorney General to examine the state’s gun laws, claiming they may violate residents’ Second Amendment rights. The Illinois State Rifle Association cites the state’s ongoing litigation over its restrictions on more than 170 semi-automatic firearms and high-capacity magazines, enacted in January 2023, as a crucial issue that warrants federal scrutiny.

Illinois gun owners are currently awaiting the outcome of court challenges, with a federal district judge previously ruling against the gun ban, though the case remains under appeal. Ed Sullivan from the Illinois State Rifle Association expressed hope that the review will address some of the more stringent anti-gun laws in the U.S., emphasizing the need for resolution as delays frustrate law-abiding gun owners across the state.
