Hochul Enacts Gun Safety Laws as Shootings Decline 53%

Governor Kathy Hochul has signed three new gun safety bills aimed at further reducing gun violence in New York, coinciding with a remarkable 53% decline in statewide shootings compared to last year. Hochul emphasized the need for stronger legislation to protect New Yorkers, highlighting that illegal modifications allowing firearms to function as machine guns pose a significant threat to public safety.

The new laws include provisions that classify pistol converters as illegal, improve tracking of firearm purchases, and mandate safety warnings from firearms dealers. Alongside these legislative changes, Hochul proposed a $370 million initiative in the state budget targeting gun violence, with funding for law enforcement technology and community programs. This commitment comes as New York also witnesses a nearly 40% reduction in homicide rates, showcasing the potential effectiveness of comprehensive gun safety measures.
