This Saturday, April 5, members of St. Louis-area Presbyterian churches launch the Guns to Gardens initiative in Moline Acres, inviting residents to transform their unwanted firearms into garden tools. Drawing inspiration from the Biblical concept of turning “swords into plowshares,” this project addresses not only the symbolic aspect of gun violence but also its practical implications by ensuring that surrendered guns are permanently disabled.
The event is hosted by Third Presbyterian Church, where the Rev. Cedric Portis emphasizes the importance of safely decommissioning firearms, particularly in light of recent accidental shootings involving children. Participants can drop off unloaded guns from 9 to 11 a.m., with the assurance that their firearms will be repurposed rather than re-entering circulation. This community-focused effort seeks to foster safer neighborhoods while recognizing the complex history surrounding gun ownership in different cultural contexts.
