A suspect is dead after allegedly shooting a Pottstown police officer during a standoff that lasted several hours on Sunday night. The incident began when 25-year-old Andrew Jackson Ecker fled from a traffic accident and later opened fire at officers responding to the scene, injuring Officer Caleb Whitney in the shoulder.
The confrontation escalated as Ecker barricaded himself in his family’s home, prompting a response from the Montgomery County SWAT team. Despite efforts by negotiators, Ecker refused to surrender and was fatally shot by police around 10:45 p.m. Witnesses described him as a “great kid” with a troubled past, raising questions about the events that led to this tragic outcome.
