Arkansas Lawmakers Slow to Act on Gun Law Reforms

Despite a comprehensive study recommending eleven changes to clarify Arkansas’ gun laws, state lawmakers have enacted only three of these proposals this session. The study, initiated due to concerns over the confusing nature of existing firearms regulations, was completed just before the legislative session began on January 13, yet legislators cite a need for further examination as a reason for inaction on the majority of the recommendations.

Among the enacted laws are measures that repeal certain hunting restrictions and increase penalties for specific offenses related to trains, but key recommendations—like streamlining concealed carry licensing—remain untouched. As the session approaches its end, both Senate and House leaders express a lack of enthusiasm for advancing the remaining bills, leaving many to question whether these potential reforms will ever see the light of day.
