Iowa’s youth-only turkey hunting season kicks off this weekend, running from Friday, April 11, through Sunday, April 13. Designed to foster mentoring for young hunters, this season is exclusive to Iowa residents and allows youth to participate in various turkey hunting opportunities throughout the spring.
This year’s tagging system, available until April 13, permits their holders to hunt during both the youth season and the four regular spring seasons—provided they are still valid until filled or until May 18. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources notes a record harvest of over 16,000 turkeys in 2024, although Jim Coffey reminds us that historically, only one in five hunters typically tags a bird.
