Dan Driscoll Takes Over as Acting ATF Chief

Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has been appointed as the acting head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), succeeding Kash Patel, who held the position since February. Driscoll, who will continue his role at the Pentagon, steps into a critical leadership position at the ATF, an agency with more than 5,200 employees and an annual budget of approximately $1.6 billion, responsible for investigating gun crimes across the United States.

The appointment comes as the Justice Department and ATF have recently made headlines by repealing a controversial Biden-era policy that aimed to revoke licenses from gun dealers who sold firearms without conducting background checks. U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi emphasized the department’s commitment to upholding Second Amendment rights, stating that prior policies unfairly burdened law-abiding citizens. As Driscoll assumes this dual role, the potential impact of his leadership on ongoing policy evaluations, including the review of firearms regulations, remains to be seen.
