Texas Lawmakers Advance Bill on Short-Barrel Firearms

Texas lawmakers are pushing forward with Senate Bill 1596, which seeks to eliminate restrictions on short-barrel firearms, a move that has provoked significant debate in the wake of the Santa Fe High School tragedy. The bill recently passed a key committee with a 9-2 vote and is set for consideration by the full Texas Senate, raising concerns among critics who remember the impact of the shooting that left ten dead, including eight students.

Supporters argue that the current regulations are outdated and inhibit law-abiding citizens from protecting themselves, framing the proposal as a matter of Second Amendment rights. As discussions continue, lawmakers are expected to hear from both proponents and opponents of the bill in a committee hearing scheduled for April 14. If passed and signed into law, the changes could come into effect on September 1, 2025, though it remains illegal under federal law to possess unregistered short-barrel firearms.
