Five Lansing teenagers are in custody following a dramatic police chase that spanned two counties and ended with a crash in south Lansing on Wednesday evening. The pursuit began around 4:35 p.m. on eastbound I-96 when deputies attempted to stop the driver of a stolen 2020 BMW X5; the chase resulted in the driver striking two patrol cars and crashing into multiple other vehicles before the group attempted to flee on foot.
During the chase, police reported that the driver, a 19-year-old, and his four teenage passengers, aged 15 to 18, were involved in a series of thefts earlier that day. While no serious injuries were reported, officers recovered two handguns that witnesses saw the suspects tossing out of the vehicle; both firearms were confirmed stolen from other counties. The driver is currently facing charges and has been lodged in the Livingston County Jail, while the other minors were turned over to their parents and a local juvenile facility.
